Family Homeless After Fire Engulfs New Brighton Home

Tuesday, July 8, 2008

A fire swept through a house along Third Avenue in New Brighton early Tuesday morning leaving an adult and four teens homeless.

According to investigators, the blaze broke out at about 5 a.m. while residents of the home were sleeping.

Homeowner Pam Robison said she was woken up by a noise and almost dismissed it.

"I just heard that noise and I woke up and I thought it was my son just messing around,” she said. “And I was going to go back to sleep. Thank God I didn't. I got up to check to see what he was doing and it was the ceiling falling in the stairwell going up to the third floor."

Firefighters from New Brighton, Rochester and Beaver Falls responded to the fire and think the blaze started in the second floor bathroom due to an electrical problem.

While crews battled the fire, flames could be seen coming from the third floor of the historic home.

There is no word yet on the amount or cost of the damage to the home.

The family is receiving help from The American Red Cross.
