PITTSBURGH -- A Pennsylvania state senator is renewing her call to scrap Pittsburgh's plan for a casino and start over.Pittsburgh Gaming Holdings, LLC announced Wednesday that it signed an agreement with PITG Gaming to buy 75 percent of the common equity in Pittsburgh's casino. The new investors will put $120 million into the project to keep it on schedule. The announcement means that Don Barden is no longer the principal owner of the casino, and it will not be named "Majestic Star.""We have been working around the clock to reach an agreement that will allow us to quickly resume construction of the project and start generating tax revenue for the city of Pittsburgh and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania," said Greg Carlin, the CEO of Pittsburgh Gaming. "It was important to us that we keep the commitments made during the application process and that the amphitheater and other exterior amenities that made the Majestic Star the best applicant in Pittsburgh will be built, in full and on schedule."In a letter to the Gaming Board, Sen. Jane Orie said, “The proper response is to revoke Don Barden's license. This last minute bait-and-switch is unacceptable."Orie wrote the letter after hearing that Gov. Ed Rendell wanted assurances from the Gaming Board that the sale of the North Shore casino would be approved. The Gaming Board is supposed to act independently. It would have to approve Barden's sale of the casino to two developers before gaming can begin. The casino project will be a 400,000-square-foot entertainment facility with 3,000 slot machines, four restaurants, four bars, a lounge, an amphitheater, a boat dock and riverfront paths located on the North Shore in Pittsburgh. In closing, Carlin said, "We look forward to introducing ourselves to Pittsburgh and being a great partner with the city and our neighbors as we build and operate a world-class facility of which Pittsburghers can be proud."The agreement is subject to approval by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and the securing of bank financing. The casino's projected opening date is expected to be in June 2009.
