Police said she was found bound with duct tape with her uterus cut open in an Ella Street apartment of another woman who police said admitted to falsely claimed a newborn baby was her own.Allegheny County police said Andrea Curry-Demus would be charged with criminal homicide, kidnapping and unlawful restraint.Police said the two had met while visiting separate inmates at the Allegheny County Jail.Investigators said the dead woman is presumed to be the mother of the baby that Curry-Demus brought to a Pittsburgh hospital last week. Further tests needed to be completed to confirm that relationship, authorities said. The autopsy on the victim showed partial evisceration that included her uterus being cut, authorities said Saturday. The body "was in a state of moderate decomposition" and appeared to have been dead for about two days before it was found, said Williams. The woman's hands and feet were bound with duct tape, and her face was covered with a plastic material that had also been secured with duct tape. A placenta was recovered at the apartment, too, police said.Famed pathologist and former Allegheny County coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht said evisceration means to cut into the abdomen and remove organs and tissues."Obviously, they did so to get to the baby," he said.Curry-Demus was arrested late last week after tests showed she was not the mother of a newborn she took to West Penn Hospital.Curry-Demus told police she befriended a pregnant woman named “Tina” and arranged to buy the baby for $1,000 after she miscarried in June and didn't want to upset her mother, according to a criminal complaint.Neighbors of Curry-Demus thought she was pregnant, and some even attended a baby shower for her."Everybody's wondering where are all the gifts everybody bought her," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified."I just had a feeling that she wasn't pregnant," her sister-in-law, Stephanie Epps, said. "She would never let you touch her stomach, and pregnant women let you do that."Channel 11 learned Curry-Demus pleaded guilty in 1991 to aggravated assault after stabbing a Wilkinsburg woman in an alleged plot to steal the woman's infant. Curry-Demus, then known as Andrea Curry, was sentenced to 10 years of probation.Police said the child in the latest case was born on July 16.Police said the baby is doing fine. He will remain at the hospital for now.Curry-Demus is charged with criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.
