Man Sentenced After Beating Roommate's Dog With Board With Nail

Hobbs Has Since Recovered

An Arlington man who pleaded guilty to beating his roommate's dog with a board that had a nail in it has been sentenced to house arrest and probation.

Anthony Ansill was sentenced Thursday to 18 months of house arrest and another five years on probation. He is to have no contact with animals and must attend anger management and mental health counseling. He also has to pay more than $2,000 in restitution.

According to a police complaint, Ansill struck his roommate’s dog, Hobbs, with the board, cutting the dog open, sometime in July.

“No being deserved what Hobbs got from this individual,” said Marilyn Roll, the current owner of the dog.

Roll said the dog is doing fine, and she and her husband are happy to have Hobbs in their home.

“I had hoped for jail time just because then he would be more controlled, even with house arrest and monitors,” she said.

The dog’s previous owner, Shawn Lea, told police that earlier in the day of the attack, Ansill had called him to report that the dog had urinated on his bed at their apartment in Arlington.

When Lea came home, he said he found Ansill petting his dog, but the dog’s abdomen was cut open.
