Canonsburg is experiencing a Renaissance, complete with a new business district, new housing and plenty of people to go with it.

"I would certainly call it a boomlet," said borough manager Terry Hazlett.

Hazlett said the population is now 8,600 and could reach 10,000 in the next census in two years.

He said new residents include workers from the Meadows Casino a few miles away.

Sean Jordan recently opened a smoke-free bar because of what he calls the town's business-friendly atmosphere.

"It's close enough to the city and if people want to live here, taxes are lower," said Jordan. "It's an awesome town for young people."

Canonsburg's business district has received a makeover in recent years, including new sidewalks, new street lights and new trees. They are also building new homes in places like Apple Hill.
