Accident Killed Popular Teacher

A suspect in the deadly hit-and-run of a popular Hopewell teacher turned himself in to police.

Police now believe they have enough evidence to charge Bernard Strauss, 61, of Moon Township, with a long list of charges including involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and DUI.

Mark Hoergl was on his motorcycle when a car hit him on Brodhead Road in June.

"We had a couple witnesses who saw that," said Capt. Greg Seamon of Moon Police. "A couple witnesses that came upon the scene afterwards and advised us that the vehicle left the scene."

According to the criminal complaint, when confronted with the fact that he fled this crash scene, Strauss uttered, "I tried to help the guy. I put a blanket on him."

Police said when they asked Strauss if he was involved in the crash, he said a truck hit the motorcycle then hit Strauss's car.

Investigators said they also found evidence on Strauss's car indicating it was his vehicle that hit the motorcycle.

A preliminary hearing for Strauss is scheduled for next week.
