Police Recover Evidence In Pregnant Woman's Shooting

POSTED: 4:51 pm EDT August 6, 2008
UPDATED: 5:06 pm EDT August 6, 2008

Target 11 has learned that police investigating the shooting of a pregnant woman on Neville Island over the weekend have recovered a gun or ammunition that could be linked to the shooter.

Alisa Musser was shot in the torso by a stray bullet while riding on a motorcycle with her friend Saturday night. The two were at the Interstate 79 off-ramp on Neville Island when Musser felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.

Musser, who is four months pregnant, went to a Pittsburgh-area hospital, where the doctor told her what she had been hit with a bullet.

Police won’t say whether they found a rifle or a bullet, but they plan on comparing the evidence to the bullet pulled from Musser’s side.

“I can't really say exactly what we've recovered, but we recovered enough evidence that we can do comparisons, so right now, we're waiting for ballistic results,” said Trooper Robin Mungo.

Musser said she thinks the shooting was an accident and that the bullet came from an area where a rifle range is located.

“I mean, I just started saying, ‘Oh my God,’” said Musser. “How lucky I am and that my baby is OK.”

The doctor told Musser that her baby is OK. Had the bullet struck several inches closer to her stomach, however, it might have been a different story.

On Monday, investigators interviewed the president of the nearby Coraopolis sportsmen's club. The club's shooting range is less than a mile from where Musser was hit.

Police said they haven't ruled out an errant shot from the club, but they also said the shot could have come from another location.

“We do believe that this is a situation where someone might have been carelessly firing a shot,” said Mungo.

Police said the person who fired the shot could be charged with reckless endangerment. Investigators said they expect the results of the ballistics tests in a couple of weeks.
