People protesting the use of police Tasers were small in numbers, but they got a lot of attention from Swissvale residents and police Wednesday night.

About 25 people marched along South Braddock Road to the Swissvale Police Department in protest of the death of Andre Thomas, 37, who died after police used a Taser on him Tuesday night.

Police were called to Hawthorne Avenue after reports of a man breaking into homes on the block.

Officers arrived on the scene and said the situation quickly grew out of control.

Police claim Thomas was refusing to comply with officers, and they used necessary force.

Investigators are waiting for autopsy results to determine if it was the jolt from the Taser that killed Thomas or a medical condition.

Protesters said they are bothered by how Thomas might have died. Shouting slogans and displaying banners, they called for prosecution of the police for their use of Tasers.

"I'm not saying the other ones aren't important, but there's something about this one that's bad,” said protester Celeste Taylor.

As the group gathered outside the borough building, reinforcements were called in from other municipalities and some Swissvale residents, fearful of retaliation, found courage to speak up.

But the protest wasn't just on the streets of Swissvale. Neighbors voiced their concerns to borough supervisors at a regularly scheduled meeting.

"I just feel really bad, and I think I can speak for my neighbors that we called the police to help Andre,” said Gerri Jones, who witnessed Thomas getting Tasered.

The FBI has been called in to determine whether the Taser led to Thomas' death. The results of the autopsy are still pending toxicology and other tests.
