Tasers Trigger Debate In Uniontown School District

Parents and Uniontown school district leaders sparred Wednesday night on a proposal to bring Tasers into the schools.

Uniontown school police chief Donald Homer, who already carries a gun, said he believes a Taser is the next proactive step.

Parents and others are concerned that Tasers in the schools will be too dangerous and too tempting for abuse.

“I am vehemently opposed to this idea of Tasers. I think you're opening yourselves up to a dangerous precedent,” said parent Jack Rogers.

Homer showed a video at the meeting that demonstrated a Taser.

“Your question is, ‘Who's this going to be used against?’” said Homer. “My answer is, whoever's a threat to this school district. It’s my job to safeguard the students, the staff.”

Homer wants to put Tasers in the hands of himself and the two other district officers, all of whom have already received their Taser certification.

The Uniontown school board could vote on the issue at its September meeting.
