A South Park newlywed was killed in a construction accident Monday morning.

Medics rushed to the work site near Second Street and the Hot Metal Bridge in Hazelwood around 9 a.m., but they were unable to save Mark Bellisario, 26.

Work was halted at the site while authorities conducted an investigation into the accident.

Bellisario, who married in May, was working on the roof when his clothing became entangled in a piece of equipment, police said.

When co-workers realized what had happened, they rushed to Bellisario's side and began to perform CPR. Despite their efforts, Bellisario could not be saved and was pronounced dead at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

"It appears a construction worker was caught trapped in a lifting device while working on the sixth floor," said Pittsburgh paramedic chief Wayne Epps. "It appears some sort of lifting device was tight around his body, which made it difficult for him to breathe caused the asphyxiation. When we found him, he was already in cardiac arrest."

Bellisario worked for Scalise Construction as a sheet metal journeyman.

OSHA is investigating the accident, but the Allegheny County medical examiner has ruled the death an accident.

According to the coroner, Bellisario died of traumatic asphyxiation.
