Pittsburgh Man Hospitalized After Police Use Taser To Subdue Him

The family of a man who was stunned by police in Pittsburgh's Observatory Hill section is upset after they weren’t being allowed to see their son, who is in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Police said they used a Taser on Jason Schmidt, 29, on Friday when they responded to a call along Haller Street. When police arrived, they said Andrew Balint and Schmidt were struggling outside the home, where Schmidt was allegedly trying to forcibly enter.

At that time, an officer told Schmidt that she was going to use her Taser to subdue him, which she did. Police said Schmidt fell to the ground, and an officer attempted to handcuff him. But according to police, Schmidt got up and attempted to charge off the porch, which is when he was stunned a second time.

Police said he fell to the ground, where officers again tried to cuff him. According to police, Schmidt continued to resist, rolling over and breaking the Taser wires. At that time, two officers stunned him again at the same time and were then able to cuff him.

Police said Schmidt continued to struggle, as officers placed him into an ambulance, which transported him to Allegheny General Hospital.

At the hospital, police said it took eight hospital personnel and medical security to restrain Schmidt, who was placed in restraints.

Initially, Schmidt's parents were allowed to visit with him in the emergency room. He was later transported to the intensive care unit, and the visitations discontinued, according to the Post-Gazette.

However, visitation has since been allowed for the mother and father during ICU visiting hours.

Police continue to investigate.
