Players underwent physicals and testing at the UPMC facility on Pittsburgh's South Side.

On Wednesday, the team held its first on-ice practice, including a scrimmage game for the hundreds of fans in attendance at Mellon Arena.

Jordan Staal scored the first goal of training camp.

The team will continue with practice sessions at the arena until next Friday.

All Wednesday through Friday practices will be open to the public, free of charge. Various players will be on the ice from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fans wishing to attend should enter at Gate 1 at 8:45 a.m. Concession stands and the Penguins official team store will be open inside the arena during the practices.

The Penguins camp will last just 10 days, and include just four exhibition games. Usually, the Penguins play seven or eight preseason games and camp lasts about three weeks.

Coach Michel Therrien said the shortened camp means fewer opportunities for younger players to prove themselves.

The team's first preseason game is slated for Sept. 20 at Mellon Arena against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Their final preseason game is scheduled for Oct. 2 against Finnish Club Jokerit in Helsinki, Finland.

The team's first and second regular season games against the Ottawa Senators are scheduled for Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 in Stockholm, Sweden. Their first home game is Oct. 11 against the New Jersey Devils.
