Congress Passes Legislation Commemorating Pittsburgh's 250th Anniversary

Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary celebration doesn't officially kick off until October 4th. However, members of Congress are giving the Steel City and early birthday present.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution that commemorates the city's 250th anniversary.

The Senate passed its version back in February.

Among other things, both resolutions praise Pittsburgh for its role in the Revolutionary War; for being the "crucible" of the Industrial Revolution; and for being named "America's Most Livable City" twice-- the only city to receive such a distinction.

We asked some of our lawmakers what they treasure about our city.

"George Washington's military career started in Pittsburgh," said Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4th District. "There was a war fought over our region specifically because of the assets we have, and still today we're celebrating and growing and thriving."

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Penn, spoke about how the city reached out to his family when his father, Gov. Bob Casey Sr., had a double transplant operation in 1993.

Rep. Tim Murphy, R-18th District, spoke fondly about Pittsburgh's winding streets.

"The thing about the streets is... you can never get to the destination you see from where you are, in any direct line." Murphy said.
