PENN HILLS, Pa. -- Authorities are trying to find the owner of several neglected pit bulls found in a foreclosed home in the Pittsburgh area.

Humane Society officers said they also found evidence of dogfighting in the Penn Hills house on Lawndale Street, including heavy chains around the animals' necks, scars on their bodies and dozens of wire dog crates.

Officers on Thursday removed nine adult pit bulls and five nursing puppies, some with injuries.

"Two of them were significantly injured. They had deep wounds that were fresh," said Humane Society officer Kathy Hecker.

Animal Friends is now taking care of the dogs in need of medical care.

Humane Society officers were alerted after Allegheny County sheriff's deputies went to the house this week to serve unrelated tax documents and noticed the dogs.

Police said they also found a submachine gun in the home, which was vacant and had no utilities.

A neighbor said she never saw anyone at the home.

"I just knew it was an empty house," said neighbor Anita Bryant.

Police are offering a $5,000 reward for information about the dogs. So far, no arrests have been made.
