Family, Neighbors Honor Victim In New Brighton Shooting

Family and friends held a vigil Monday night for a shooting victim who was killed in a New Brighton apartment.

Demetrius Schofield, 27, was found dead inside a unit at the Valley View Gardens apartment complex Friday night.

"He was the sweetest person that you could ever find. He'd give you the shirt off his back," Denise Jones, Schofield's mother.

"This violence has to stop. We can't keep putting guns in the hands of our children because we're killing each other. And it's my son tonight but it may be somebody else's tomorrow," said Michele Schofield, the victim's stepmother.

Police said Kipp Jordan, who was arrested on a probation violation, is their main suspect in the crime. However, when the shooting occurred, no one called 911 to report a crime.

“That’s what’s disturbing,” said New Brighton Police Chief Charles van Fossan. “No one called us. That’s just not acceptable.”

A handful of people were in the Valley View Gardens apartment when the shooting occurred, but no one called 911, police said. Officers happened to be in the parking lot, responding to another disturbance at the time.

Some neighboring residents in the apartment complex can’t believe no one called the police.

“Someone had to have a cell phone,” said neighbor Sierra Winstead. “People were in there. Why not dial?”

Van Fossan said the police need the public’s help and trust. “I’m not sure why they don’t call, but they need to. This is their community.”
