Police said a toddler’s death in Indiana County is one of the worst cases of child abuse they have ever seen.

“There were several bite marks … on the baby. There was a broken wrist,” said PA State Police Trooper Tim Lipniskas. “The baby was shaken severely. The baby was punched and had multiple bruises.”

Joshua Louis Turner, 18, of Black Lick, has been charged with criminal homicide because the boy, 19-month-old Leonard McIntire, died Saturday at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. An autopsy shows he died of head trauma.

The child's mother said she left the child with Turner, her boyfriend of two months, and when she returned, he told her the child had fallen and bumped his head.

Police said Turner at first told them he was carrying the toddler on his shoulders when he fell and was hurt. But police said Turner eventually acknowledged beating, biting, shaking and punching the child on Oct. 27.

Indiana County District Attorney Thomas Bianco said he "can't comprehend" the crime and will closely review the autopsy report before deciding whether to pursue the death penalty.

Turner was initially being held in the Indiana County Jail on $250,000 bond. However, he is now being held without bail after the charge against him was changed to homicide.
