According to Washington County 911, the chopper went down behind the Carroll Township Fire Department along Route 837.

Officials said the helicopter was about 100 feet off the ground trimming trees when it went down.

Pilot Jeffery Pigott, 45, was taken to a Pittsburgh-area hospital after the accident but was later released and is OK.

A man on the ground witnessed the chopper crash first-hand.

“The helicopter started to smoke and doing 360s,” said witness John Spina. “It went down, and I ran over the hillside with two other guys to see if he was OK.”

A representative from Allegheny Power said Pigott works for Aerial Solutions, an Allegheny Power contractor that conducts tree trimming operations.

The FAA is investigating the accident.
