Second Person Charged With North Side Store Owner's Death

The uncle of a 19-year-old man in custody in connection with a fatal robbery at a Pittsburgh clothing store is now facing charges as well.

Pittsburgh homicide detectives arrested Darnell Dixon, 23, of the North Side and charged him with one count each of criminal homicide, robbery and criminal conspiracy for the shooting death of Michael Ross.

Dixon's nephew, 19-year-old Edward, was arrested on Saturday and is currently in the Allegheny County Jail without bond.

City police have charged Edward Dixon with homicide, robbery, conspiracy and a firearms violation in the Saturday afternoon robbery of the CM & M clothing store in the city's Marshall--Shadeland neighborhood.

Investigators say that the two men entered the Hodgkiss Street store wearing masks and armed with firearms. They demanded money from Ross who then pulled a firearm in defense.

Darnell Dixon and Ross began shooting at each other and Ross was found dead in the store. The Dixons then drove to Mercy Hospital where Darnell remains in serious/stable condition with a gunshot wound to the torso.

"They entered wearing masks and were armed with handguns and demanded money from the clerk who then produced his own firearm in self-defense," said Lt. Kevin Kraus, of the Pittsburgh Police Department. "There was an exchange of gunfire, and that's when we believe the victim and the actor were shot."

"I was saddened because, you know, he has a good reputation in the community," said Pastor Gregory Hammond, of the Bethel Assembly of God.

Hammond described Ross as someone who tried to look for the good in people. He said Ross even found a way to turn graffiti into a mural.

"He could have quit and left town," said Hammond. "He could have done the thing of, you know, complaining, on that route. But he decided to make, what is the phrase? Give me lemons, and I'll make lemonade."

Darnell Dixon is currently under police guard until he is able to be transported to the county jail from Mercy Hospital.

Ross opened the store in 2001. His wife said it had been robbed three times before.
