PITTSBURGH -- Normally deep discounts on TVs aren't seen until Black Friday, but retailers are already aggressively dropping prices for HDTVs -- especially low-end sets.

Recently Best Buy advertised a 32-inch Insignia HDTV $499, and Circuit City advertised a 32-inch Proscan for $499.

According to DisplaySearch, a market research firm, Black Friday prices could go as low as $400 for a 32-inch LCD set, $600 for a 42-inch plasma set and $799 to $999 for a 40- to 42-inch LCD set. Gayle Marco, marketing professor at Robert Morris University, said, “There are definitely going to be more discounts because people aren't rushing out.”

Since television isn’t a necessity for most people, Marco said retailers are going to have to offer good deals to get customers to buy.

Until then, many buyers like Steve Webb will wait for the right price.

Webb said he’s willing to pay a little less than $2,000 for a 47-inch HDTV and he’s willing to wait until he finds a set he wants at that price.

Marco said retailers are concerned many buyers are like Webb and are willing to wait as long as it takes to find a set they can afford.

That is why she said some stores will try another strategy to get buyers in their stores.

Marco said buyers can expect to see many retailers bundling items, offering something extra with a television purchase. Recently, Best Buy and Circuit City both had ads offering bundles. The stores offered a HDTV, a Playstation with Blueray, and either a sound system or theater system for one price.

So when is a good time to buy?

Most experts said to expect some good deals right after Thanksgiving and the week before Christmas.
