Teen Will Not Face Death Penalty In Ligonier Man's Slaying

PITTSBURGH -- A Unity Township soldier accused of killing a 75-year-old man in September will not face the possibility of the death penalty.Police said Anthony Mowry, 19, of Latrobe, beat Mike Jones with clock chimes, a candlestick and his fists before slashing the victim's throat. Jones was a retired executive with the Greensburg Tribune-Review.Mowry's confession was released in his preliminary hearing in November.In his confession, Mowry admitted that he and Jones had a sexual relationship. He said that during a sex act, "He did something that really angered me, so I started punching him in his face and he kept trying to fight back so I choked him …”Speaking about his relationship with Jones, Mowry said, “I was probably 14 or 15 when he first started making comments towards me.”Police said that after killing Jones, Mowry confessed to setting his apartment on fire to cover up the crime and drove off in his car.Mowry was arrested on Sept. 19 in Fort Hood, Texas.
