BALTIMORE -- FBI agents and police officers joined family members to say goodbye to an FBI agent killed in a drug raid in Indiana Township, just outside of Pittsburgh. The funeral for Special Agent Sam Hicks was held at the Cathedral of Mary of Queen in Baltimore, the city where he once served as a police officer.Several thousand were in attendance, including about 500 members of law enforcement from western Pennsylvania, including Hicks' wife, Brooke, and his 2-year-old son, Noah.Hicks was a narcotics detective in the Baltimore Police Department before joining the FBI so there will be a large contingent of local law enforcement personnel, as well.Pastor John Mohan, who performed the wedding ceremony of Hicks and his wife, read the sermon at his funeral."Sam was a man who loved deeply, delighted in his child, worked for justice and died violently," Mohan said. The only speakers at the funeral were FBI Director Robert Mueller and U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey.Mueller said he didn't know Hicks but was able to catch a glimpse of his character by talking to his family and colleagues. He called Hicks "something of a superhero," saying he was "full of strength and energy.""While it was true Sam loved his job, he loved his family more," said Mueller. "The only thing that made him happier than coming to work was going home to Noah and Brooke."Mueller presented Hicks' widow with a memorial star and told her that she and Noah would always be part of the FBI family.Mukasey ordered flags at the Justice Department to fly at half mast Tuesday."We honor Special Agent Hicks for fearlessly doing his duty, for treading his alooted path, even though it led him to the gates of death," Mukasey said.Hicks was laid to rest at a cemetery about seven miles from the cathedral at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.Mukasey said Hicks' name would be added to the Wall of Honor, which lists the names of fallen agents at the FBI headquarters. His name will also be added to the national law enforcement memorial in Washington.Hicks' family is requesting memorial contributions to a college fund for Noah.Contributions to the Sam Hicks fund can be made in care of The St. Margaret Foundation, 815 Freeport Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15215.Christine Korbe, 40, the wife of suspected drug dealer Robert Korbe, 39, was charged with killing Hicks as agents showed up at the couple's house to arrest her husband.Hicks, 33, had been with the FBI since March 2007 and was assigned to the Pittsburgh office in August 2007, said Michael Rodriguez, special agent in charge of the office.Christine Korbe told police she was standing at the top of the stairs and thought she shot an intruder. She returned to her bedroom, called 911 at 6:05 a.m. and was arrested while on the phone. Korbe said she never heard police identify themselves.
