Sparks Fly Over Future Of Uniontown Fire Fighters

UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- Fire fighters were trying to get their jobs back amidst budget troubles and threats of tax increases in Uniontown.There was a lot of anger at Saturday's council meeting, even though nearly all of the city employees laid off in Uniontown got their jobs back.Fire fighters deal with a lot of danger, but nothing quite like the fight they have on their hands with city council.Due to a city deficit of nearly $1.3 million, the mayor laid off a total of 41 city employees. Six of them were fire fighters.Of those 41, only three fire fighters have not been returned to their positions.In a show of solidarity, fire fighters left their uniforms on the council members' table to let them know that without manpower, someone had better be ready to volunteer when the next fire call comes in.City Council voted to raise property taxes 5 1/2 mills, hoping to rehire the fire fighters back in the future.
