City Councilman Proposes Energy Saving Street Lights

Plan Involves Converting All 40,000 Pittsburgh Street Lights

Pittsburgh City Councilman Bill Peduto said this is a chance for Pittsburgh to become a world leader and save money at the same time.

His idea is for all 40,000 of the lights on city streets to be converted to energy saving LED lights.

That means the lights would use the initially more expensive, but longer lasting energy savers.

Peduto said LED lights require less maintenance and after the initial purchase could save tax payers $2.5 million every year.

Peduto also said the conversion would lead to a reduction of more than 984 pounds of carbon dioxide and they contain no mercury.
