Firefighters Battle Flames And Cold On North Side

An early morning fire on New Year's Day damaged three businesses on Pittsburgh's North Side.

The three-alarm fire started about 2:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Western Avenue.

Firefighters battled flames, heavy smoke and temperatures in the teens for nearly two hours before the fire was declared under control.

A floral shop, a cafe and a bar sustained major damage.

Emergency dispatchers said one firefighter suffered an ankle injury.
