HILLER, Pa. -- On Wednesday night at least 100 former employees of Brownsville Tri-County Hospital met at the Hiller Volunteer Fire Hall. The workers met with attorneys to find out how to get back pay and other benefits from the bankrupt hospital.Last week Brownsville Tri-County filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and surrendered its operating license to the state and shut its doors. Many workers are owed several weeks back pay.Bobbi Jo Friend, a former employee said, “On Jan. 23 the check actually bounced, so that is why I wanted to see what could be done because I was not only working without 3 weeks of pay I was working without 5 weeks.”Attorney Herb Mitchell is helping the workers file wage complaints with the Labor and Industry Center in Harrisburg. Mitchell is working pro-bono.He said wages are usually treated as a priority creditor in bankruptcy proceedings.Mitchell also said the hospital stopped paying workers medical insurance premiums in Oct. 2008, but never told the employees.Mitchell said, “It was at least apparent that premiums were not paid to the insurance company for their health insurance benefits. People who utilized various medical providers are getting bills because the insurance claims were denied for payment.”Workers also have questions about contributions to their 401K retirement plans.Mitchell is also working with the Fayette county District Attorney to see if there was any criminal wrongdoing.
