Three people were killed and two others were injured Friday when they were hit by a suspected drunken driver as they left a nightclub near Southeastern Louisiana University, police and university officials said.

The victims were hit by a car around 2 a.m. while walking along Nashville Avenue. The car ran off the road, hit the group, and then the driver drove off, Hammond police said in a news release.

Officers found the car at a home and arrested 21-year-old Derek Quebedeaux, police told New Orleans television station WDSU.

The university identified the victims as business administration graduate student Maxime Profit, 23, of Vaires Sur Marne, France; sophomore Beth Marie Boudreaux, 19, of Husser, a psychology major and member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority; and former student Thurman "Ryan" Lowe III, 24, of Kenner.

The two injured students were taken to North Oaks Medical Center.

Freshman Nadine Steward, 18, of England, suffered critical injuries, police said. She is a finance major and member of the Southeastern women’s tennis team, the university said. Business administration graduate student Maja Bradonjic, 24, of Belgrade, Serbia, was treated and released. She is a former Southeastern women's tennis player.

The university said in a statement that the victims, along with several others, were walking single file along the shoulder of Nashville Avenue after leaving The Buzz, a nightclub on University Avenue.

Witnesses told police the car was speeding, the university said.

Quebedeaux was charged with three counts of vehicle negligent homicide, two counts of vehicle negligent injury, hit-and-run, DWI and reckless operation, police said.

Counselors are meeting with the athletic and Greek communities, as well as other student groups, the university's president said.

"Our prayers and condolences are with the family and friends of these young members of our Southeastern family," Southeastern President John L. Crain said.

University officials said a memorial service is being planned for next week.
