Landfill Officials Get Earful About Smelly Situation In Imperial

Updated: 8:12 am EDT March 12, 2009

Allied Waste officials told residents at a special community meeting Tuesday night that they are prepared to address a very smelly problem at a local landfill, but some expressed their doubts the problem would be fixed.

More than 200 people packed the Findlay Township Activity Center, and most of them were angry about the foul odors coming from a waste processing plant on Boggs Road in Imperial.

"We deeply regret that the odor problems exist. We want to ensure not only are we taking full responsibility of the problem, we will not offer any excuses. We simply want to ensure that every action is being taken to correct the problem," said Jim Bowen, spokesman for Allied Waste.

Dressed in bright green T-s hirts with the phrase "Green Our Air," a group of teachers from Wilson Elementary School, which is located less than 2,000 feet from the landfill, told company and health department officials more needs to be done to control the air quality.

Health officials said the air is safe, but there are plans to install new monitors and filters at the school.

Allied Waste, which has now been cited with two violations for the noxious fumes, has already begun installing eight new gas wells.

The company has also offered to organize an advisory committee that would include residents and community leaders.
