Atty. General Teaches Students About Online Predators

Posted: 1:47 pm EDT April 23, 2009Updated: 2:14 pm EDT April 23, 2009

State Attorney General Tom Corbett spoke to Dorseyville Middle School students in Indiana Township about the dangers of online predators.

Corbett told sixth- and seventh- graders that when you are texting with someone online, you could be talking to a sexual predator posing as a teenager. He related the story of a 12-year-old girl from Pittsburgh who met a predator online and ended up being taken to Virginia and tortured for months by a 38-year-old sexual predator.

The attorney general said the biggest problem lies in sending revealing pictures by text message, or “sexting.”

“They’re not using their heads when they start sending them,” Corbett said. “The young girl takes a picture of herself without her clothes on and sends it to a boy and thinks he’s not going to show them to someone else.”

The attorney general pointed out that the state arrested 24 sexual predators in just the first four months of this year. He also urged students to talk openly with parents and teachers about their problems.
