O'HARA TWP., Pa. -- The Guyasuta Fire Department in O'Hara Township is facing the same problem as many other Pennsylvania volunteer fire crews: it doesn’t have enough money to survive. The department said Tuesday it has been losing money for years, savings have been drained and the department has finally reached the breaking point.Without an infusion of new funds from the township, it would have to close the station by the end of June. "Even at $150,000 a year to run a fire department with two stations, the apparatus we have, over 400 calls a year, and highly trained individuals, its a bargain," said department president, Rick Celender.Firefighters took their deadline to township council Tuesday night. The Council supported a change that would involve the township buying the fire department's mortgage and defer payments for the year. The measure will be enough to save the department about $22,000 and keep it running through December. A more permanent solution needs to be found, whether it involves raising taxes or reallocating the way the township's three fire departments evenly split township funds. "For years and years we've been going, all the fire companies get $50,000 dollars when one is being shorted half and the other two are 30 and 40 percent over what they need," said Dave Hadley, vice president of council.Channel 11 talked with the firefighters after the meeting and they were all very happy with the decisions. The deadline to close has been rescinded.
