Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Causes Extreme Headache For Local Woman

Jessie Foster, of Penn Hills, welcomed the crew of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition into her neighborhood last fall. The popular ABC television show that builds new homes for needy families came to Penn Hills to shoot an episode.

During the shooting, a contractor operating a hydraulic lift sideswiped Foster's van, damaging the entire side of the vehicle. Foster said that representatives from the show told her they would take care of the van, but seven months later she is still battling with the contractor's insurance company.

An insurance adjuster determined that it would costs $3,700 to repair the damages, but the contractor's insurance company determined that the vehicle was only worth $1,100. And that's what they offered Foster.

"It's been a terrible nightmare. You can't buy a piece of paint on a car for $1,100,"said Foster.

Foster told Target 11 Investigator Rick Earle that she repeatedly called and e-mailed Extreme Makeover, but she says they never got back to her.

Earle then contacted the show and a spokesman for ABC sent Earle an e-mail advising Target 11 to contact the contractor.

Earle spoke with Mark Rust from Montgomery and Rust Inc., of Mt. Lebanon. Rust told Target 11 that he feels bad about the accident, but he says it's an insurance claim that's being handled by his insurance company.

A representative from the insurance company would not comment on the pending case.

Target 11 spoke with an attorney who specializes in insurance claims, and she said that accident victims are at the mercy of insurance companies. She says the law allows insurance companies to take the cheaper way out.

"I hear this time and time again, and people say to me all the time, where am I going to get a car for $1,100. I can't even get a bicycle," said Cynthia Danel, an attorney with Edgar Snyder and Associates.

Despite all of this, Jessie Foster says she's isn't backing down.

"I'm not going away. It's a big production, but underlying it does a little harm. Even though it does good, it does a little harm," Foster added.
