Funeral Today For Boy Who Drowned In Yough River

Updated: 10:14 am EDT May 29, 2009

A 13-year-old boy who died after going under while swimming in the Youghiogheny River near Port Vue on Sunday will be laid to rest today.

Divers found August Berg's shortly before midnight on Sunday.

The call came in to 911 after a passing boater, Wayne Masekiewicz, found a young girl struggling in the water, authorities said. When she was pulled into the boat, she said she was swimming with a boy who went under the waves and did not come back up.

"The boy went into the river and a wake, possibly from another boat, pulled him out, and the girl was holding onto him for a short period of time, and then he went under the water,” said White Oak Police Chief Joe Hoffman.

‘The young girl got a click up, waving,” said Masekiewicz. “’Help. Help. Help.’ I thought she was joshing around. I swing the boat around, and she said, ‘Help me. Help me. I threw her the first life preserver, and she missed it. Pulled the boat back around and told her to stay there. Threw the second one, strapped her in, and she was nervous, crying saying her friend drowned. She couldn't save him, you know.”

Divers searched the river, as firefighters and police searched the area by foot around the 15th Street Bridge. A Stat Medevac medical helicopter searched by air.
