DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Investigators determined that the May 26 fire that consumed a storage complex in Derry Township was the act of an arsonist. The arson caused $125,000 in damage, officials said. Renters lost valuable and sentimental items that were stored there for safe-keeping.At the time, Rich McNaughton, assistant chief with the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, said a fire that ignited a Derry Township storage complex on Tuesday appears to be suspicious. The three-alarm fire broke out in a row of storage units at New Alexandria Mini Storage on Route 22 around noon.New Alexandria VFD was first to arrive on the scene. “When we rolled on scene, there was heavy smoke. You couldn't tell exactly which bay it was coming out of in the beginning,” said McNaughton. “Once they got the doors open, we could see visible fire. The guys went in and started putting out the fire.”Traffic in both directions on Route 22 was backed up as the road was closed for about an hour while the firefighters did their job.Westmoreland 911 said the fire went from two to three alarms for a tanker call due a water access problem across Route 22.Officials said no one was injured in the blaze.
