Man Shoots Black Bear At Back Door In Dravosburg

Timothy Debeneadto heard a noise at the back door of his Dravosburg house Saturday night.

He soon discovered the source; it was a black bear.

"He was at the door, standing up on its back feet. You can see his nose print on the window."

Debeneadto decided to go outside with a pistol.

He said the bear stomped its feet.

"And that's when I fired. I didn't know if it was going to charge me. I didn't know what was going to happen."

After the bear was shot it went to a neighbor's yard, where it died. Debeneadto said police told him to bring it back to his yard.

"I feel bad that I shot the bear," he said. "It seems it was a little small."

In the morning, two wildlife conservation officers from the state game commission came to talk with Debeneadto and to remove the bear.

One officer described the bear as a male yearling.

She said Debeneadto would face no charges.

"I don't blame him for protecting himself. Who would think a bear would be at your back door?" said officer Beth Fife.

Debeneadto said he's relieved he's not facing charges but he also says he feels sorry for the bear who showed up unexpectedly here in his backyard.
