State police in Greensburg are warning businesses and clubs about a large number of commercial burglaries which have taken place since the beginning of June.

Trooper Jeanne Martin said there have been 12 burglaries at commercial businesses in the area since the beginning of June, which she said is unusually high.

These burglaries have been primarily concentrated in the southern portion of Westmoreland County including Youngwood and New Stanton, as well as East Huntingdon and Mt. Pleasant townships.

The burglaries have taken place overnight and in the early morning hours, police said.

In most cases, doors have been pried open or actors have gained entry through the roof. Electrical and utility lines are sometimes severed. Cash and safes containing cash have been stolen.

The Regional Family YMCA in East Huntingdon has been broken into twice in the past month, officials said.

Earlier this week, the Wines & Spirits store at Countryside Plaza in East Huntingdon was also robbed. The glass in the entry door was shattered and several bottles of malt liquor were removed.

In Mount Pleasant two residences, and the Sunoco Station on Main Street, were also robbed, authorities said.

Police urge business owners and employees to take precautions to protect their facilities. Businesses and social clubs are advised to deposit funds daily and remove any cash from their business every night.

Martin said that police urge businesses to harden their structures and secure the area in whatever means they are able, even if it's just adding a few outdoor lights.

Residents and persons in the area of businesses should be alert for any suspicious activity, and report it immediately to police.
