Police: Man Struck Officer In Chest After Setting Off Fireworks

INDIANA, Pa. -- Three people were arrested in Indiana County in connection with an assault on a police officer.According to Indiana Borough police, Ian Conners, 21, threw a large firework mortar round onto Philadelphia Street Wednesday morning.Police officers said they saw Conners throw the firework from a second-story apartment and then witnessed the mortar explode.Officers then obtained a warrant to search the apartment for illegal fireworks.Before officers entered the apartment, Conners allegedly called the Indiana County 911 Center to attempt to get the officers to leave the building.Police said they encountered Conners when he left the apartment. They said he struck one of the officers in the chest and attempted to take his badge.Police said Conners also tried to push an officer down two flights of stairs.Conners was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault, propulsion of a missile, resisting arrest, violation of the 911 emergency telephone act and risking a catastrophe.Conners was released on $5,000 unsecured bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 2.Police said when they went back to the apartment, they found two women and several marijuana smoking pipes.Police identified the women as Erica Leonardo, 18, and Elizabeth Ali, 19, both of Indiana, Pa.Leonardo was charged with several counts of drug paraphernalia, underage drinking and disorderly gathering.Ali was charged with underage drinking.
