Canonsburg Residents Rope Off Seats For July 4th Parade

The town of Canonsburg has a population of 8,000 on July 3rd; on July 4th the number jumps to 60,000 as people flock into town for its annual 4th of July parade.

Residents know, in order to get a good seat for the parade, you have to rope off spots for your chairs days in advance.

“I started screaming this morning to my husband, ‘Where's the rope? Where's the chairs?’” said resident Karen King.

“I see the same people the same spot year after year,” said resident Mary Maslanik. “Like church pews, everyone has a spot.”

Almost a week in advance, the parade route is already lined with fold-out chairs that have been roped off by their owners.

Channel 11 News asked Canonsburg police about the practice. Officers said each one of the chairs could be considered abandoned property; however, instead of enforcing that particular law, they support the parade and the practice of reserving spots in advance.

The Canonsburg 4th of July parade is the second largest in the state of Pennsylvania.
