Airline Bumps Teen Traveling Alone

Parents Upset Son Stayed Overnight In Strange City

Nicole Scott was outraged when she found out her son, Anthony, had been bumped from his flight from Morganfield Kentucky to Pittsburgh and was staying alone in a Chicago hotel.

"I was outraged. I was angry that he was put off the plane ... he's in Chicago at a hotel, no family ... who's responsible," said Nicole.

The Mt. Oliver boy is 16 and trains at the Earle C. Clements Job Corp program in Morganfield. He was coming home for summer break on an American Airlines flight.

The June 25 flight from a Chicago layover was overcrowded according to the Scotts and Anthony was bumped.

"They told me due to weight restrictions the last nine people had to be taken off the flight," said Anthony.

The airline then put him up in a Chicago hotel.

American Airlines has an unaccompanied minor policy, it's required for children under 15 and a certain fee is added to the ticket.

But for teens between the ages of 15-17 the unaccompanied minor policy is optional, not required.

The Director of the Earle C. Clements program told Channel 11 by phone that the Department of Labor arranges the travel for the participants in their government program.

Director Billy Cooper said their students range from 16 to 24 years old and the government does not pay for the optional watch on students flying under the age of 18.

"It is not unusual for a student to get delayed en route. Typically we don't have a problem if the airline puts them in a hotel for a night," said Cooper.
