First Day Of Regatta Kicks Off With High Security

The 32nd annual Three Rivers Regatta began Friday with lots of security on hand.

"We have a new security group this year. Some of the folks worked with us last year. We have retired FBI, city of Pittsburgh, state police are here. It's absolutely critical with three to four hundred thousand people at an event you want to make sure they are safe and secure,” said Regatta Chairman John Bonassi.

In addition, there will be plain clothes security keeping an eye on Regatta-goers.

Coordination of all of the security is done inside the Pittsburgh Emergency Mobile Command Unit.

According to Ray Demichiei, the Deputy Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, if anything major happens, they will be in constant contact with all responding emergency crews.

The Mobile Command Unit will spend Friday on the North Shore, Saturday at Point State Park and Sunday back on the North Shore.
