A Clarion County man is jailed on charges that he was driving drunk when his vehicle hit a buggy, killing the horse that was pulling it and injuring five people in the carriage.

Brandon Lee Breghenti, 20, of Knox, faces a preliminary hearing July 14 for the crash that happened at about 10 p.m. on Saturday.

State police said Breghenti hit the carriage from behind on Route 208. Two people in the carriage are being treated in Pittsburgh hospitals for their injuries, while three others in the buggy were treated for lesser injuries at Clarion Hospital.

All were ejected during impact, police said, including the driver, Mark Burkholder, 42. There is no word on the extent of the victims' injuries.

Police said Breghenti fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later. He was taken to the Clarion County Jail on $75,000 bond.
