Traffic Headaches Begin, Fort Pitt Detours In Place
Project Detours Last Through August
Pittsburgh residents have been warned for months and now they are getting used to another round of construction on the Fort Pitt Bridge and tunnel.
Saturday is the first full day the outbound Fort Pitt Bridge and tunnel are closed. The outbound lanes closed Friday night so the crossover work could be done.
Crews are preparing the outbound lanes for next Friday when inbound traffic will move to the outbound lanes so the inbound bridge and tunnel can be renovated. The inbound lanes will be closed until August.
Channel 11 found some backups at the on ramp to the Fort Duquesne Bridge Saturday. There was also heavy traffic on the West End Bridge, but the biggest problem for drivers is becoming familiar with the new driving patterns.
Residents should be old pros -- the detours are the same as last year -- but the detours are leaving many drivers baffled.
"There aren't enough signs telling us where to go," driver Susan Ranalli said.
The real test for drivers is Monday afternoon during rush hour.
