Behind-The-Scenes As Local Hospitals Prepare For G-20

Local hospitals are gearing up for the G-20 and the possibility that something could go wrong.

They are preparing for the worst but hoping for the best.

Target 11 has learned that many of the hospitals in the city have been working very closely with the Secret Service preparing for the G-20.

Doctors and nurses at Allegheny General and UPMC in Oakland are going over their emergency checklist one last time, making sure they are ready.

Dr. Fred Harchelroad is chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at AGH.

Harchelroad said,"The preps for the G-20 are really the same for any type of disaster.”

At UPMC Presby in Oakland treatment actually begins outside the facility. There are 24 shower heads built into the ceiling that pour 800 gallons of water per minute to decontaminate patients.

And there are other built-in safety measures there as well.

Dr. Joe Sajama of UPMC said, “In order to make sure people don't walk in the front door, this gating system will go all the way down in front of the main entrance such that it actually forces people to enter right here and then walk through the showers before they go in. “

Once inside the hospital, there is another decontamination room and the emergency triage rooms are equipped with X-ray and ultrasound machines.

But before patients even get to the hospital, their movement in ambulances on the ground and in helicopters in the air are tracked at the UPMC Medic Command Center.

Dr. Ronald Roth at UPMC said, “We provide medical direction to the ambulances that transport patients to any hospitals in the region.”

Roth said, “I think this is the biggest event ever in the city of Pittsburgh from an EMS standpoint. We are very excited about it. We have always had things in place to deal with disasters, big mobilizations and now we get to put it in place. It's exciting. A little bit nervous, but we are excited to do it.”

UPMC said agents from the Secret Service have visited their hospital and checked out their facilities, so they know exactly what equipment and supplies they have on hand.

Both hospitals tell Channel 11 they plan on bringing in extra staff during the G-20.
