The fire started at row house along Cypress Way.

One neighbor said she woke up to her boyfriend screaming.

"I heard my boyfriend screaming, 'John. John,'" the woman said. "And he went outside and I went outside and saw the whole place up in smoke."

The boyfriend, Ronnie Thompson, went for a garden hose and fire extinguisher to put the fire out. Within minutes, medics arrived and found John Brysh trapped inside the home.

"He was on the floor in front of the couch, and the couch was still on fire," said medic Ray Rush. "His shirt had fire on it, and we pulled his shirt off and pulled him out."

Brysh was unconscious, but medics were able to pull him from the flames. He survived, but had burns on his nose, chest and shoulder.

Brysh was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this time.
