A local grocer continues to make price cuts during tough economic times to save Pittsburgh residents more on produce.

Giant Eagle announced $32.5 million in price cuts on many produce items Monday.

The stores will be offering new lower prices on apples, oranges, potatoes, Iceberg lettuce, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, bagged salads, short-cut carrots, stem tomatoes and grape tomatoes.

On average the prices will be reduced by 23% in the produce department as a part of a five year initiative to offer customers thousands of low prices across the store.

A special "Savings Squad" will stop by 20 Giant Eagle supermarkets in the Pittsburgh area to publicize the new savings.

"Giant eagle will continue to lower prices to give customers the best everyday value," said Giant Eagle’s Rob Borella.

The latest price cuts come only months after Giant Eagle announced a program to offer free antibiotics to shoppers.

The supermarket chain said it wants to ease families' worries over prescription drug costs.

The drugs are available in 46 dosages. They are amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline hyclate, erythromycin, penicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, tetracycline, and bacitracin.

The drugs offered are commonly used to treat things like strep throat, ear infections and pneumonia. They were all previously on the store's list of drugs available for $4.

There are no limits on the number of prescriptions customers can fill and the promotion covers new prescriptions and refills.

Giant Eagle has 223 stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland. There are pharmacies in 210 of those stores.
