A Verona man accused of killing his girlfriend's father during a confrontation over the weekend will stand trial.

Steven Williams is charged with homicide and tampering with evidence.

Police said Williams and Mark Bigenho, 49, got into a fight early Saturday morning at the Verona apartment along Allegheny River Boulevard, where the two lived with Bigenho's daughter.

Police said Bigenho died from head injuries Sunday morning.

"They had an argument, and my client acted in self-defense," said defense attorney Jimmy Sheets. "Unfortunately, injured Mr. Bigenho and that ultimately resulted in his dying."

"It's also possible, and a jury will have to decide, if there was some intention," said prosecutor Mark Tranquilli.

"I heard some commotion around 3 a.m. Saturday morning, but you just let it go, because sometimes that's you making noise sometimes in the morning," said neighbor Douglas Morrison. "I didn't think much of it. Apparently there was something more to it this time. I didn't investigate. I was trying to get some sleep for work the next day."

The medical examiner said Bigenho died of blunt force trauma to the head at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
