Police arrested a driver in Belle Vernon Wednesday who didn't know his van was on fire.

Firefighter Joel Davis and another firefighter said they saw the van traveling down the street while ablaze. Davis tried to get the attention of Charleroi resident Carl Miller Jr., the driver, near the Route 70 ramp.

“He wouldn’t stop for nothing. The van was smoking and left a big trail of smoke coming down the road. I tried to stop him three times. He tried to ram my vehicle twice,” said Davis.

Davis then pulled in front of Miller, 47, forcing him to stop.

“We got out and grabbed him out of the van. I told him his van was on fire. He didn’t know where he was. He didn’t know anything,” said Davis.

Southwest Regional police arrested Miller for suspicion of DUI as the firefighters attended to the blaze.

Miller was transported to the Mon-Valley Hospital for a legal blood draw and treatment from the fire.

“I feel, had I not stopped him, he would have gone on the interstate and hurt somebody. That’s where he was heading,” said officer John Hartman.
