Residents Threaten Legal Action To Save UPMC Braddock

A large crowd of frustrated residents packed into the Braddock Carnegie Library Music Hall Wednesday night to oppose the closing of UPMC Braddock.

The hospital announced it was closing on Jan. 31, because not enough patients are admitted.

The mayor of Braddock John Fetterman, and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato told the crowd they were committed to keeping the hospital open, but said it would be a tough fight.

Onorato said that if the battle is lost, the county plans to explore other options for the 22,000-square foot facility.

The group, Save Our Community Hospital, has started a petition to get an injunction to stop the closure.

UPMC said its decision is not so much about the money as it is about the underutilization of the hospital.

An opposition rally is set for Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the corner of 5th Street and Braddock Avenue near the hospital.
