Changes Considered For Site Of Deadly Train Accident

Posted: 10:46 pm EST November 2, 2009

Leaders in Derry Borough met Monday night to discuss safety changes at the Chestnut Street railroad crossing.

An officer is now patrolling near the tracks where Sheila Singer, 37, of Derry, and her 2-year-old son, John Smart were killed Friday while crossing the tracks. The officer will cite anyone who tries to cross.

Police said Singer and her three children had just left the Dollar General store near Chestnut Street when the accident happened shortly after 5 p.m.

Singer took her two daughters across the tracks and had them stand on the other side while she went back to get her son, who was in a stroller, officials said.

The Derry police chief said he yelled to the woman to not cross the tracks because a train was coming, but he said she continued to cross anyway.

As the woman was crossing, the police chief said, the stroller got caught in the tracks and Singer and her son were both hit by the train.

The mayor said Monday that the borough is talking with three railroad consultants about new safety measures. One idea under consideration is having a fence installed to keep people from crossing the tracks while a footbridge is constructed.

A letter has also been sent home to parents in the Derry Area School District urging everyone to stay away from the tracks.

Funeral services for the victims will be held Tuesday.
