Group Looks To Block 'Larry Flint Hustler Strip Club' On North Side

A group called HDV wants to open a "Larry Flint Hustler Strip Club" in the 1600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, not far from the new Rivers Casino in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Channel 11 News obtained court documents in which the group behind the club accused the city’s zoning ordinance of being unconstitutional.

The Manchester Citizens Corporation is speaking out, saying it doesn’t want the club in its backyard.

"Our Community has taken the stance where we do not want to have strip clubs in our community, whether they are on this side of the highway or other side of the highway," said Jerome Jackson of the Manchester Citizens Corporation.

In documents filed in District Court, HDV officials said they want to feature live, non-obscene, female exotic dance performance entertainment, some of which will be "topless" and some of which may be fully nude.

HDV is suing the city of Pittsburgh over its adult entertainment zoning regulations claiming city leaders have too much power to grant or deny requests.

The city denies those accusations, but for the Manchester group, it's not about zoning, they said. It's about safety.

"If anything was to happen in that area it would be very difficult for police to get there, because there is just pretty much one way in and one way out to get down in that area," said Jackson. "We are really trying to build our community and neighborhood and we think a strip club is definitely not in our plans of building a community. A family oriented community."

An attorney for HDV had a meeting on Thursday and his clients submitted a proposal to the mayor and city council. He said his clients are remaining optimistic.
