The old Point Marion Bridge, which closed last month, carried Route 88 over the Mon River on the border of Fayette and Greene Counties.Monday, the demolition project was completed when crews imploded the two ends of the old bridge.PennDOT had rated the bridge "structurally deficient" and considered it one of the most dangerous in the state."I went across the bridge. It was due for a change. It would rattle every time you went across," said Rick Ireland of Morgantown.A crew from Wyoming used 12 pounds of military grade explosives to bring the 79-year-old bridge down into the river at 9 a.m.PennDOT enforced a mandatory 800-foot safety zone around the demolition area. The U.S. Coast Guard will work to remove the span and handle the clean-up of any debris. The scheduled demolition of the bridge was set to happen last week, but was pushed back so crews could move extra weight off the bridge's deck. The new Point Marion Bridge, which opened earlier this year, was also closed for the implosion.
