Officers in Baldwin are using a brand new optic camera to shed some light on investigations.

Baldwin Boro police are one of the first in the country to install the optic cameras, which register every possible heat source, in each of their cruisers.

“Darkness is not our friend,” said officer Keith Hagan. “Anything that gives us the ability to see where we normally couldn’t is certainly to our advantage.”

The cameras were installed last week on every cruiser’s spot light, and have already been effective.

Recently, Hagan was searching for a man who crashed head-on into a telephone pole and disappeared into complete darkness.

“He may have recovered from his accident and found his way out of the woods, or he may have died,” said Baldwin Chief Michael Scott. “With this device we could locate him.”

Scott said heat from parked cars has turned out to be the most surprising help so far.
